On behalf of Community Action Against Racism (CAAR), this is a posting of their calling event on Sat.
Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011
CHAT (Center for Hmong Arts and Talent)*
995 University Avenue W., second floor, St. Paul
The meeting is regarding the WCCO story that perpetuated negative stereotypes about Asians.
If you aren’t aware, on Oct. 31, WCCO ran a story during it’s 10 p.m. show saying a New York City Chinese meat market was selling dog meat. In fact, the market was selling duck meat and the miscommunication resulted in the market being raided by New York Health Department officials. The story perpetuates negative stereotypes of Asians but represents the kind of poor journalism that hurts communities of color – the kind of irresponsible journalism that we have seen all too often.
WCCO has since pulled the story but has failed to respond to letters from the Asian American Journalists Association and Society of Professional Journalists, demanding they explain why the story was ran and publicly stating they made a mistake. The AAJA chapter sent a letter to the television station Nov. 8. No response. National AAJA sent a letter today. I have notified the local AAJA chapter that we will be calling a meeting on this. They want to be kept abreast.
CAAR will be asking for true coalition support. We simply can not commit to working on this UNLESS our allied organizations put in the work, too.
Please keep your emails and phones on for more info. I will also post on our Facebook page.
Finally, Sandy and I will need 1-2 of you to “project manage” this work. We will advise you. Please let us know if this is something you care about and you want to do more.
